Advanced Bionics Extends Marvel CI Product Offering With Expanded Linked Two-Ear Solutions, And Target CI Version 1.5 Enabling Remote Programming

BREAKTHROUGH MARVEL COCHLEAR IMPLANT TECHNOLOGY NOW OFFERS MORE HEARING OPTIONS

STÄFA, Switzerland, October 18, 2023 — Advanced Bionics (AB), a global leader in cochlear implant technology, received CE Mark approval for the latest Marvel CI fitting software Target CI Version 1.5, and offers new features to improve hearing care delivery and patient outcomes, including:

  • Linked two-ear solutions including with a CROS device, allowing more CI patients to hear well from both sides
  • Clinical efficiency enhancements for programming for both cochlear implants and hearing instruments
  • Enabling Remote Programming via patient’s smartphone with future release of an app currently under EU Notified Body review.

EXPANDED LINKED TWO-EAR SOLUTIONS INCLUDING PHONAK CROS DEVICE

Hearing with both ears provides a better sense of where sounds are coming from, allows people to hear better in noisy situations, and makes hearing less tiring.1,2,3 Together with our sister company Phonak, AB remains the only manufacturer to offer linked two-ear solutions with hearing aids and cochlear implants designed to communicate and work together as a pair. Now AB’s Marvel will also be the only CI system with a CROS (Contralateral Routing Of Signal) device. With the introduction of the Phonak CROS device, AB allows people who hear with cochlear implants more possibilities to hear from all around them.

For people who have severe to profound hearing loss in both ears but hear with only one Marvel CI, having a CROS device on the other ear allows it to pick up sounds from that side and transmit them to the Marvel CI. This way, listeners can have a more complete sense of their surroundings and follow conversations from all directions, especially in noisy situations such as restaurants or in the car. Together with a pair of Marvel CI sound processors, or a bimodal pairing with Marvel CI and a Phonak Link M hearing aid, the introduction of CROS makes Marvel the only CI system with linked bilateral, bimodal, and CROS configurations.

TARGET CI VERSION 1.5 IS NOW BETTER THAN EVER

Target CI is designed to be the smarter CI fitting software, giving professionals the flexibility to meet their patient-specific needs. Since its introduction, it remains the only software which allows professionals to program a cochlear implant and the associated bimodal hearing aid with one software in one fitting session. Its intuitive workflow and user-centric design and features are made for faster fittings, allowing professionals to spend more time with their patients, rather than the software.

The new Version 1.5 is even more powerful, with usability enhancements related to workflow, ease of use, convenience, and professional performance. In addition to bimodal fittings, it now also supports programming and configuration of the compatible Phonak CROS device together with a Marvel CI. Target CI Version 1.5 has also reintroduced some of the popular features from the previous AB fitting software Soundwave, and HCPs can now import patient data from AB’s cochlear health monitoring tool, the AIM system.

Since its introduction in 2020, Marvel CI has redefined hearing performance with cochlear implants," said Victoria E. Carr-Brendel, Ph.D., GVP, Sonova Group and President of Advanced Bionics. "Marvel CI’s universal Bluetooth connectivity, dedicated sound processor for children, and integrated compatibility with Phonak hearing devices are still features that are unique and unmatched on the market. The launch of these extended Marvel CI features today continues to demonstrate our focus on making it easier to hear and live with cochlear implants. Remote programming gives people easier access to their hearing care professionals. The new CROS device allows more people with Marvel CIs to hear where sounds are coming from. And Target CI Version 1.5 allows professionals to serve their patients with even greater efficiency. Our mission has always been to allow people to live a life without limitations. And this launch is yet another big step towards that ultimate goal.

Its integrated Roger™ technology help kids hear their teachers and conversation partners in classrooms, cafeterias, and auditoriums directly in their ears, bypassing noise in the environment. Plus, direct smartphone connectivity via Bluetooth® and the intuitive AB Remote app help kids stay connected with the world around them throughout their day.

Dynamic Bimodal Hearing with Sky Link Marvel and Naida Link Marvel

Most cochlear implant wearers have only one cochlear implant despite having severe or profound hearing loss in both ears. The other un-implanted ear requires a super-powered hearing solution that works in harmony with the cochlear implant. This is known as bimodal hearing, and scientific evidence shows that combining a hearing aid with a cochlear implant results in significantly higher speech understanding and sound quality than provided by the cochlear implant or a hearing aid alone.*

Marvel technology has now been extended to these bimodal-hearing patients with the introduction of Phonak Sky Link Marvel and new Naida Link Marvel. Both the Sky Link Marvel and Naida Link Marvel can be worn together as hearing aids or be paired with an Advanced Bionics Sky CI Marvel or Naida CI Marvel sound processor. Because they are both based on Marvel technology, the cochlear implant sound processor and hearing aid are wirelessly connected and communicate with each other in a coordinated, dynamic way. Like their cochlear implant counterparts, both Sky Link Marvel and Naida Link Marvel also feature RogerDirect™, hands-free calls with own voice-pickup, and directly connect to iOS, Android or other Bluetooth-enabled devices.

“This is one of the most important and impressive product launches Advanced Bionics has ever had. Building on the wildly successful Phonak Marvel platform, Naída CI Marvel, Sky CI Marvel, and Target CI are going to be game changers for the cochlear implant industry, revolutionising the way our wearers can expect to hear with their cochlear implant systems, and the way their hearing care providers fit them,” stated Victoria E. Carr-Brendel, Ph.D., GVP, Sonova Group and President of Advanced Bionics.

“The relationship between Phonak and Advanced Bionics is more than just a collaboration – it’s truly a partnership among two sister brands that share Sonova’s vision of a world where everyone enjoys the delight of hearing and lives a life without limitations,” added Sandy Brandmeier, President of Sonova USA’s Wholesale Hearing Instruments division. “Marvel was Phonak’s most successful product launch in history and we couldn’t be prouder to offer that technology to bimodal wearers as well as those preparing for cochlear implants with Naida Link Marvel and Sky Link Marvel.”

Target CI Marvel is designed to offer hearing care professionals easier, faster, and smarter fittings.

Target CI offers hearing care professionals easier fittings with the industry-standard Noahlink Wireless, giving them and their patients the freedom and convenience of cable-free programming. For the first time ever, professionals can program a cochlear implant and the associated bimodal hearing aid with one software in one fitting session. Its intuitive workflow, and user-centric design and features are made for faster fittings, allowing professionals to spend more time with their patients, rather than the software. Target CI is also designed to be a smarter fitting tool, with default settings optimised for cochlear implant patients, giving professionals the flexibility to meet their patient-specific needs.

“My hearing aid research studies have shown that AutoSense technology provides significant improvement in hearing in many challenging real world listening situations. I’m pleased to see this kind of innovation available in the Marvel CI to allow adult and paediatric CI patients to connect with the world around them more easily than ever before. Target CI’s integration with the Noah software system and Noahlink Wireless will also add a great deal of efficiency for clinicians working with cochlear implants,” said Jace Wolfe, Ph.D., Chief of Audiology & Research, Hearts for Hearing.

Advanced Bionics Launches Active Insertion Monitoring (AIM) System: an innovative monitoring solution for implant surgery and post-op

Valencia, CA, July 10, 2019 – Advanced Bionics (AB) unveils its latest powerful innovation, the AIM™ System, at CI2019, the 16th Symposium on Cochlear Implants in Children in Hollywood, Florida. AIM stands for Active Insertion Monitoring, and is designed to be an invaluable tool for surgeons and hearing care professionals working with cochlear implant patients.

Real-time ECochG monitoring during electrode insertion

The challenge with CI surgery today is that surgeons have no objective means of monitoring the function of the cochlea during electrode insertion. The AIM system addresses this issue by using the implant to record ECochG, a proven1 measure of cochlear health, during insertion. ECochG, or electrocochleography, is a technique for recording potentials generated by the inner ear and the auditory nerve in response to acoustic stimulation. Utilizing the advanced measurement capabilities of the AB implant technology, AIM is able to measure ECochG potentials in real-time and provide feedback to the surgeon during electrode insertion.

Objective audiometry and other measurements without patient collaboration

The AIM system continues to offer benefits after the surgery. It can be used to perform objective audiometry from 250 Hz to 4000 Hz quickly and reliably without patient collaboration, making it especially convenient when working with younger and harder-to-test patients. In addition to audiometry, the AIM system can also perform a suite of objective measures including NRI, ESRT, and electrode impedances. All of these tests can be performed quickly and automatically with the click of a button.

Fast, objective, convenient

For all its versatile functionality, AIM is easy to use with its modern and intuitive user interface. After testing, patient data and results can be exported easily, and a full PDF report is generated automatically. In other words, the AIM system is fast, objective, and convenient.

“We’re very excited about the introduction of the AIM system because we believe that this is an important innovation for CI surgery. Surgeons and audiologists want the best outcomes for their patients, and AIM can be a means for them to achieve that. It is another testament to AB’s commitment not only to our CI wearers, but also to the hearing health professionals who care for them,” stated Victoria E. Carr-Brendel, Ph.D., GVP, Sonova Group and President of Advanced Bionics.

Advanced Bionics announces that their patented HiRes™ Ultra 3D Cochlear Implant has been awarded the Medtech Breakthrough Award 2019 for Best Overall Medical Device Solution.

Valencia, CA, June 5, 2019 – Advanced Bionics (AB) announces that their patented HiRes™ Ultra 3D Cochlear Implant has been awarded the Medtech Breakthrough Award 2019 for Best Overall Medical Device Solution.
Built on the HiRes™ Ultra platform and developed by the internal Research and Development Team at AB, the new implant is the Hassle Free and Pain Free choice for recipients who may need to undergo MRI examinations at some point during their lifetime. Even for high resolution MRI scans, there is no need to surgically remove the new multi-magnet assembly and no requirement for head bandaging, meaning no hearing downtime for the patient.

“We are proud and grateful to receive this prestigious award for the Best Overall Medical Device Solution,” says Victoria Carr-Brendel, PhD, Group Vice President Cochlear Implants (CI), Sonova. “It is a resounding recognition of the ingenuity and hard work of the people at Advanced Bionics over the last years. The new magnet technology in our Ultra 3D implants is improving the quality of life for many of our CI wearers, making MRI scans a hassle-free and pain-free experience.”

The innovative Ultra 3D multi-magnet assembly is capable of aligning with the magnetic field of the MRI scanner irrespective of patient orientation or movement. This allows adult and pediatric cochlear implant wearers to safely undergo high-resolution imaging, such as 3.0 Tesla MRIs, without surgery or head bandaging, without feeling pain or discomfort, and without restrictions to the orientation of the head during the MRI procedure.

MRI examinations are becoming increasingly commonplace as a diagnostic tool for a wide variety of medical conditions. Prior to the development of MRI-compatible CI magnet technology, wearers and healthcare professionals had to contend with the magnetic field from MRI machines exerting force on the CI magnet inside the head, causing torque and subsequent pain. Although these problems were managed to some extent using head bandaging and/or careful alignment of the MRI field with respect to the CI, it was common practice to remove magnets for high resolution MRI examinations, requiring out-patient surgery and interrupting the patient’s hearing during the process.

With the HiRes Ultra 3D, AB developed new multi-magnet technology that is compatible with MRI scans, giving CI wearers the peace of mind for any current and future health issues that may necessitate an MRI examination. Furthermore, the multi-magnet assembly is designed to withstand repeated exposure to MRI procedures without any loss of magnetic strength or mobility of the magnet assembly components.

Groundbreaking Microphone Technology to be launched by Phonak and Advanced Bionics

Phonak and Advanced Bionics today announce a breakthrough in new microphone technology, that will help people with hearing aids and cochlear implants hear better especially in noise. The invention is called MultiBeam Technology, which soon will be applied in new advanced wireless microphones. First scientific results with patients show large improvements in speech recognition.

Stäfa (Switzerland) and Valencia (USA), 6. February 2018 - Phonak and Advanced Bionics today announce a breakthrough in new microphone technology, that will help people with hearing aids and cochlear implants hear better especially in noise. The invention is called MultiBeam Technology, which soon will be applied in new advanced wireless microphones. First scientific results with patients show large improvements in speech recognition.

People with hearing loss use hearing aids or cochlear implants to hear better. Despite huge advancements in these devices, fundamental barriers remain in noisy restaurants, large business meetings or social gatherings, all acoustically challenging environments. There, 31%1 of people with hearing aids still have difficulties following conversations. This can lead to social retreat with further health implications.

Since September 2009 a highly specialized task force of more than 10 digital signal processing and acoustic engineers have been working on the development of MultiBeam Technology. By utilizing multiple microphones in six directions, speech from 360 degrees is calculated and compared. The direction with the best signal-to-noise ratio is automatically selected. The technological processing complexity is almost ten times higher than the previous technology generation from Phonak, and the power consumption was reduced by more than one third at the same time.

In a scientific investigation at the University of Texas in Dallas a group of 10 patients with hearing aids were tested in a situation which resembled a noisy restaurant or very noisy meeting with three conversation partners (see Figure 1). Speech understanding improves up to 61% in this group conversation in 75 dBA of noise compared to using hearing aids alone.2 Professor Linda Thibodeau, from the University of Texas in Dallas who led the research, says: “The Multibeam Technology will allow persons with hearing challenges who have resigned from attending social functions, family gatherings and business meetings to experience significant improvements in speech recognition. This could ultimately lead to improved quality of life as they confidently reconnect with others using discreet, convenient and highly versatile technology.”

Hans Mülder, senior audiologist and director marketing at Phonak says: “We are extremely happy to have achieved this milestone. It underlines the unwavering commitment of our finest engineers to never be satisfied with existing solutions but to continue to push the envelope of technology, so that more people can enjoy  their lives to the fullest. We are now working hard to embed the new technology in coming solutions.”

Advanced Bionics sound processors to become Bluetooth® compatible with any cell phone* or TV, based on revolutionary new chip technology from Sonova

VALENCIA, CA, December 21, 2017 – Advanced Bionics, the performance leader in cochlear implants, today announces that they will incorporate Sonova’s revolutionary Sonova Wireless One Radio Digital Chip and wireless radio technology into their portfolio of solutions. Current users of the Naída CI Q90 sound processor, and future recipients, will be able to connect to any Bluetooth-enabled cell phone. The low-voltage wireless chip provides direct connectivity to cell phones including Android™, iPhone® and even classic cell phones – with no extra body-worn streaming device required. This option has the lowest power consumption of any Bluetooth Classic device used in hearing instruments and works seamlessly with Sonova proprietary 2.4 GHz wireless protocols, including Roger™, for hearing in noise and over distance, and AirStream™ technology, enabling a new plug-and-play solution for high-quality TV streaming with excellent stereo sound quality.1

“By offering a solution to the entire market – including the more than 80% of the world’s smartphone owners who purchased Android devices – Sonova becomes the first and only major hearing solutions company to unlock the enormous potential of universal direct connectivity,” says Lukas Braunschweiler, CEO of Sonova. “Our chip will be the foundation for a wide variety of unique and innovative solutions in the coming years.”

The Sonova Wireless One Radio Digital chip simplifies consumers’ lives by offering them the freedom of direct connectivity, truly hands-free calling, and excellent TV sound quality.1 Further, this Made for All solution means that Sonova brand users (Phonak, Unitron, Hansaton, and Advanced Bionics) are free to select their cell phone technology based on their personal preferences, and not the compatibility of their hearing instrument.

Sonova Wireless One Radio Digital: future-proof chip is the most advanced ever used in hearing instruments

Sonova’s breakthrough chip Sonova Wireless One Radio Digital employs the most-advanced semiconductor process ever used in hearing device manufacturing. With more than 42 million transistors placed on less than 7 mm2 of silicon, the low-voltage radio chip has the lowest power consumption of any hearing aid using Bluetooth Classic. This is made possible through the introduction of 40 nm CMOS technology, combining one radio chip and one antenna to power all applications. Sonova Wireless One Radio Digital runs multiple communication protocols to choose the best solution for any specific application: Standard Bluetooth (Bluetooth Classic and Bluetooth LE) protocols to connect to hundreds of multimedia audio sources, proprietary protocols such as AirStream for a true plug-and-play solution with excellent sound quality for TV streaming, and the ear-to-ear communication protocols supporting binaural applications. No commercially available radio chip can fulfill these extensive requirements. The cutting-edge chip is future-proof, capable of supporting advancements in wireless features and a world of digital service solutions, such as distance support, for future generations of hearing devices.

True hands-free calling

With the introduction of Sonova Wireless One Radio Digital technology, the lives of Advanced Bionics patients will be simpler than ever, thanks to real hands-free voice calling. Users can answer or reject a phone call by simply pressing the Push button on their hearing instrument. The ringing of the phone is heard through the hearing instrument and, once the call is accepted, the conversation is instantly streamed. The wearer’s voice is picked up by an intelligent microphone network and transmitted to the other caller, similar to the way a wireless headset works. All this is done without ever having to touch the phone.

Hearing devices double as wireless TV headphones

The new TV Connector, which uses proprietary AirStream technology, is a state-of-the-art compact multimedia hub that seamlessly connects wearers to their favorite TV programming for an immersive audio experience. It’s a true plug-and-play solution that automatically turns a pair of hearing instruments into wireless TV headphones. The TV Connector is also capable of connecting to multiple listeners simultaneously, making it ideal for watching TV together.

Filling a significant gap in the industry

As a Made For All hearing solution offering universal connectivity, the Sonova Wireless One Radio Digital technology fills a significant gap for both hearing-impaired listeners and hearing care professionals. According to a recent report,2 more than four in five smartphone buyers worldwide choose the Android operating system. Sonova Wireless One Radio Digital technology addresses this sizable, so-far neglected market while also providing compatibility with Apple’s iPhone. In addition, the new solution addresses the more than 23 percent of hearing instrument wearers ages 50+ who own a classic cell phone.3 Universal connectivity to any cell phone is especially important considering the intense growth in smartphone ownership over the last decade. This pioneering Made For All solution is another result of Sonova’s unwavering commitment to change people’s lives for the better.

Introducing the New HiFocus™ SlimJ Electrode and announcing the Success of the First Surgeries

—The HiFocus™ SlimJ Electrode, the latest electrode on the HiRes™ Ultra cochlear implant platform, offers protection to the delicate structures of the cochlea—

VALENCIA, California, November 16, 2017 –Advanced Bionics (AB) announces TÜV approval of the HiFocus™ SlimJ electrode. Built on the proven HiFocus™ platform and developed with numerous surgeons from around the globe, the new SlimJ electrode features a thin, straight design for easy insertion through the round window or cochleostomy.  The AB engineering team designed the electrode around the key goal of protecting the delicate structures of the cochlea during electrode insertion. The HiFocus SlimJ electrode, alongside the HiFocus Mid-Scala electrode, provides the surgeon with a choice of electrodes.

Developed with leading cochlear implant surgeons, the HiFocus SlimJ electrode offers several high-performance features designed to suit individual patient anatomy and surgical preferences for the best possible hearing outcomes.

“The HiFocus SlimJ electrode addresses the surgeon need for an alternate type of electrode whilst still offering full spectrum coverage and maintaining the performance potential of the individual. And surgeons have commented that it is easy to handle and to insert,” says Mark Downing, Director of Medical Marketing and Product Management at Advanced Bionics.

The HiFocus SlimJ electrode is available on the HiRes™ Ultra cochlear implant, the latest generation of HiRes implants.

The HiFocus SlimJ electrode is designed to meet the needs of the global market and is currently available in limited markets in Europe. The first surgeries were conducted at Medizinische Hochschule Hannover (MHH) by Prof. Lenarz and his team.

“I am very pleased with the successful implantations by Prof. Lenarz at MHH in Hannover. This  marks an important milestone not only for Advanced Bionics but for all future CI candidates,” says Hansjuerg Emch, Group Vice President Cochlear Implants, Sonova.

Marketplace availability for all other regions will be based on regulatory approval by sector. When the HiRes Ultra implant is paired with the Naída CI sound processor, the listener realizes the full integration of AB and Phonak technology. The Naída CI, built from the same foundation as the most popular hearing aid line from Phonak, automatically adjusts to the sound environment to improve comfort and speech understanding in noise and automatically handles wireless inputs from streaming devices, giving listeners access to phone calls and other media sources. The Naída CI can also be paired with a second hearing device (another Naída CI, a Phonak Naída Link hearing aid or the wireless Phonak Naída Link CROS transmitter), providing all AB listeners with complete access to sound.

The Naída Link CROS Solution

Advanced Bionics extends their portfolio of solutions for cochlear implant users with the introduction of the Naída Link CROS Solution.

Advanced Bionics extends their portfolio of solutions for cochlear implant users with the introduction of the Naída Link CROS Solution

VALENCIA, Calif., July 26, 2017 – Today, Advanced Bionics (AB) and Phonak announced an industry first for cochlear implant users. The Phonak Naída™ Link CROS, a wireless audio transmitter, was introduced to provide full access to sounds for unilateral cochlear implant candidates with no hearing in their opposite ear. Approximately 30%– 45% of cochlear implant recipients¹ are single-sided listeners who are at a significant disadvantage when positioned with their “hearing ear” away from the speaker, as might happen in automobiles or at meetings or group dinners. A second cochlear implant would be beneficial but access may be limited due to medical indications or cost. The Naida Link CROS is a tiny, ear-level device that picks up signals presented to the “non-hearing” ear and instantaneously transmits them to the cochlear implant system on the “hearing ear.” A recent study demonstrated that the Naída Link CROS provided immediate improvement in speech understanding in quiet and noise and a better overall hearing experience².

The Naida Link CROS device extends the Naida family of hearing solutions from AB and Phonak for severe-to-profound individuals. Utilizing the proprietary Binaural VoiceStream Technology™, an automatic wireless network is established between the Naida CI sound processor and a Naida Link CROS transmitter, Naida Link hearing aid or second Naida CI sound processor. This wireless network enables the sharing of control signals, and full-bandwidth audio streaming so that all cochlear implant recipients can benefit from hearing from both ears. The Naida Link CROS allows unilateral cochlear implant recipients to hear from wherever they want and walk into any listening situation with more confidence.  It is so discreet and easy to use that they can just switch it on to enjoy hearing from both sides and wear it without being noticed.

“We are excited to bring CROS technology to cochlear implant users. This technology has been life-changing for individuals with single-sided deafness. We expect the same benefits for those individuals who hear from a single cochlear implant,” said Stefan Launer, Vice President of Science & Technology, Group Research & Development.  Tony Spahr, Director of Audiology and Product Management at Advanced Bionics, says “I’m genuinely excited about the difference this will make. Listening with one ear presents great challenges for communication. For individuals relying on a single cochlear implant, the Naída Link CROS is the best way to gain complete access to the sounds of the world.”

The Phonak Naída Link CROS is available in the United States and Canada starting today and in Europe starting this summer.

Hear The World Foundation Donates Cochlear Implants for the First Time

The Hear the World Foundation, a Sonova initiative, will for the first time support an aid project with the donation of cochlear implants.

HEAR THE WORLD FOUNDATION DONATES COCHLEAR IMPLANTS FOR THE FIRST TIME

Disadvantaged children with profound hearing loss receive the gift of hearing in Panama

Staefa, Switzerland, January 18, 2017 - The Hear the World Foundation, a Sonova initiative, will for the first time support an aid project with the donation of cochlear implants. In February 2017, the first three children with profound hearing loss will get the gift of hearing and thus a fair chance of leading an independent life. This engagement builds on the support the Hear the World Foundation has provided to the Panamanian non-profit organization Fundación Pro Integración since 2013 and marks another milestone in the Swiss foundation’s 10-years history.

If left untreated, hearing loss can have serious consequences, particularly for children. Children who cannot hear, or can barely hear, do not learn to speak and, in many countries, are not able to attend school, which lowers their chances of pursuing a career and leading an independent life.

First donations of cochlear implants for children with profound or total hearing loss

Until now, children who did not benefit from even the most powerful hearing aids have been denied the chance of better hearing. That is why for the first time, the Hear the World Foundation is donating cochlear implants (CI) to three Panamanian children, in collaboration with the Sonova subsidiary Advanced Bionics.

“The first cochlear implants donation is an important step for us,” says Lukas Braunschweiler, President of the Hear the World Foundation. “By leveraging another advanced technology from the Sonova product portfolio, we can now also give the gift of hearing to children with profound or total hearing loss.”

The gift of hearing where the state-run healthcare system can’t help
Although Panama is ranked the second most competitive economy in Latin America according to the World Economic Forum, 26 percent of the population is living in poverty, and is lacking access to audiological care. While the health sector is making major progress in terms of its audiological care infrastructure, the state-run healthcare system can only cover the costs of audiological care for a handful of those living in poverty.

That is why, since 2013, the Hear the World Foundation supports the Fundación pro Integración (FUNPROI), one of the few institutions in the country who closes this gap by providing ear medical care to children living in poverty. By providing hearing aids, funding and expertise, hundreds of children have been helped. In addition, FUNPROI was honoured with the Richard Seewald Award in 2014, an annual recognition by the Hear the World Foundation to honour outstanding engagements.

About the Hear the World Foundation
By supporting the charitable Hear the World Foundation, Sonova is campaigning for equal opportunities and a better quality of life for people with hearing loss. As a leading provider of hearing care solutions, Sonova fosters social responsibility and contributes towards a world where everyone has the chance to enjoy good hearing. For instance, the Hear the World Foundation supports disadvantaged people with hearing loss around the world and gets involved in prevention. It focuses particularly on projects for children with hearing loss, to enable them to develop at the appropriate rate for their age. Since its establishment in 2006 the Swiss foundation supported over 80 projects in 39 countries and thus helped thousands of people to hear better. More than 100 celebrity ambassadors, including celebrities such as Cindy Crawford, Plácido Domingo, Annie Lennox and Sting champion the Hear the World Foundation.

About Fundación Pro Integración
Fundación Pro Integración (FUNPROI) is a non-profit organization that aims to improve the quality of life and fight against isolation of people with hearing loss and mobility disabilities in Panama. FUNPROI pays special attention to assist individuals with scarce resources and extreme levels of poverty. As one of the few institutions in the country specialized in supporting young people with hearing loss, the non-governmental institution provides free examinations and professional audiological care with hearing aids and speech therapy. In 2014 FUNPROI received the Richard-Seewald-Award by the Hear the World Foundation in recognition of their exceptional engagement.

Advanced Bionics SoundWave™ 3.0 Fitting Software Unlocks Powerful Technology in the Naída Bimodal Hearing Solution

Advanced Bionics (AB) has released the latest version of their fitting software, SoundWave™ 3.0.

 — Advanced Bionics SoundWave™ 3.0 Fitting Software Unlocks Powerful Technology in the Naída Bimodal Hearing Solution —

VALENCIA, CA, October 18, 2016 — Advanced Bionics (AB) has released the latest version of their fitting software, SoundWave™ 3.0. With this current software upgrade, new and existing users of the Naída Bimodal Hearing Solution will have access to full integration of their Naída CI sound processor and the Naida™ Link hearing aid through wireless communication. The wireless exchange of data and the full audio bandwidth between devices has been available to listeners with two Phonak hearing aids, or two Advanced Bionics Naída CI sound processors; however, this is the first-ever network between a cochlear implant and a hearing aid.

The Phonak Naída™ Link is the first hearing aid built specifically to work with a cochlear implant. It includes a specialized fitting algorithm designed to improve understanding1,2,3 and sound quality when the hearing aid is worn in combination with a cochlear implant. The Phonak Naída Link hearing aid and the AB Naída sound processor also share a number of automatic features to help people hear their best in challenging situations1, such as noisy restaurants or windy environments. The devices can also simultaneously receive audio from wireless streamers, allowing bimodal listeners to enjoy the phone, music, and media in both ears. The Naída CI sound processor and Phonak Naída Link are made for each other, making it easy to hear, easy to use, easy to communicate and easy to connect in everyday situations.

Hansjuerg Emch, President of Advanced Bionics and Group Vice President of the Sonova Medical Division, said “Establishing this wireless communication really makes it easier for the listener to succeed in more environments. Even something as basic as changing a program would have required a person to locate the controls on each device independently. Now, a
single button pressed on either device initiates the change on both. These shared controls keep the devices synchronized and help people hear their best at all times1,2. We are excited that we can offer this performance boost1 to both existing and new Advanced Bionics cochlear implant recipients.”

“Phonak’s Binaural VoiceStream Technology™, which enables sharing of audio signals through the ear-to-ear network, has proven to benefit understanding in some of the most challenging environments,” said Dr. Hans Mülder, Marketing Director at Phonak Communications AG. “Listeners are better able to understand1 on the phone, in the car, over distances, or in very noisy environments with these features. The Roger technology will seamlessly support both the Naída CI and the Naída Link. The good news is that we are also working together with Advanced Bionics on even more solutions for AB recipients, so that they continue to benefit from the innovation of the two companies working closely together.”

—The HiRes™ Ultra cochlear implant provides the proven benefits of the Advanced Bionics HiResolution™ Bionic Ear System, featuring the thinnest implant profile from AB—

VALENCIA, Calif., September 12, 2016 – Advanced Bionics (AB) has released the new HiRes™ Ultra cochlear implant and will debut it at this year’s American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF) conference in San Diego. Built on proven HiRes electronics technology, the new HiRes Ultra implant features the thinnest implant profile from AB and includes the HiFocus™ Mid-Scala electrode, designed to protect the delicate structures of the cochlea.

Developed with leading cochlear implant surgeons, the HiRes Ultra with the HiFocus Mid-Scala electrode offers several high-performance features designed to suit individual patient anatomy and surgical preferences for the best possible hearing outcomes.

“AB’s HiRes technology offers the fastest stimulation rate, the widest input dynamic range and the precise stimulation of the hearing nerve via 120 bands, which leads to greater music appreciation and more natural sound for recipients,” says Hansjürg Emch, President of Advanced Bionics and Group Vice President Medical of Sonova.

The HiRes Ultra is the latest generation of HiRes implants and features a low profile, which makes it ideal for recipients of all ages. The implant exceeds the industry standard for impact resistance and can undergo 1.5T MRI scans with the magnet left in place. In cases where a 3T MRI is needed, the magnet can be easily removed.

Additionally, the HiRes Ultra implant gives recipients access to AB’s Naída CI sound processor and wireless accessories that integrate with the latest Phonak sound cleaning features. The combination of AB and Phonak technologies allows recipients to understand better in noise, connect wirelessly to a variety of media or devices, and receive streaming signals between both ears. The AB and Phonak partnership offers the only hearing aid and CI processor that are perfectly made to work together, and make hearing easy and natural for bimodal recipients.

The HiRes Ultra implant is designed to meet the needs of the global market and is currently available in North America and Europe. Marketplace availability for all other regions will be based on regulatory approval by sector.

New Hearing Solution Changes the Way People Hear with Cochlear Implants

Advanced Bionics and Phonak introduce Naída Link, the first hearing aid capable of communicating with a cochlear implant.

— Advanced Bionics and Phonak introduce Naída Link, the first hearing aid capable of communicating with a cochlear implant —

Valencia, Calif., May 11,  2016 —
Advanced Bionics (AB) and Phonak announced today the introduction of the new Naída bimodal hearing solution featuring the Phonak Naída™ Link, the world’s first hearing aid offering full-bandwidth, bidirectional audio streaming with the Naída CI sound processor from AB. Using shared technology co-developed by AB and Phonak, the Naída devices are able to communicate with each other in a way no other hearing aid and cochlear implant combination can match.

“After years of combined efforts in audiology, R&D and product management, we are delivering a game changer in technology. Two Naída devices — a CI and hearing aid — can now use the same advanced automatic technology and stream the audio signal from one side to the other. This means they can respond and adjust the same way to changing listening situations, as if they are one system,” said Dr. Hans Mülder, Marketing Director at Phonak Communications AG. “It is very rewarding to see AB and Phonak delivering on the expectations that were raised when the two companies came together.”

By transmitting audio information as well as sharing automatic features, controls, and the wireless Roger™ system, the AB and Phonak Naída devices make it easier to hear with them together. Studies show that this provides a proven advantage for hearing in noise and greater listening comfort compared to using a cochlear implant and any other hearing aid.1,2

Approximately 40% to 60% of cochlear implant recipients are considered “bimodal”, which means they wear a hearing aid on one ear in combination with using a cochlear implant on the other.3 “This breakthrough in bimodal hearing means we can deliver better hearing to more people affected by significant hearing loss and that’s always our goal,” said Hansjuerg Emch, President of Advanced Bionics and Group Vice President of the Sonova Medical Division.

The Phonak Naída Link hearing aid will be available starting this summer in the United States
and Europe.
